What Is Salt Film? How It Differs From Dust
Salt film is a mineral residue left behind when ocean salt carried in the air settles on glass and stays damp from the marine layer instead of drying and blowing off. Unlike dust, it doesn’t wipe away with a dry cloth โ it needs to be broken down with water, and left long enough, it etches into the glass surface permanently rather than just sitting on top of it.
That’s the core difference: dust is inert and sits on top of the glass until it’s wiped or rinsed away, while salt film stays chemically active on the surface because the marine layer keeps it damp. Over time, that ongoing dampness is what causes salt to move from a surface film into permanent etching.
A 0-PPM purified water system is built specifically to lift salt film out fully rather than smear it around, and a protective step can help slow how quickly it re-forms on the most exposed homes.
