What Removes Hard Water Stains From Windows?

Purified (deionized) water at the point of cleaning prevents new mineral deposits, and treating existing hard water staining typically requires a specialized mineral-deposit removal process rather than standard glass cleaner.

Once mineral deposits from sprinkler overspray or tap water dry and bond to glass, a standard glass cleaner just moves the deposit around instead of lifting it. The bonded layer needs a treatment designed to break it down directly, without abrasive pads or acid-based products that risk damaging the glass or surrounding frames.

Is It Removable Buildup or Permanent Etching?

This matters before anyone touches the glass with anything abrasive. Buildup — the mineral film from sprinklers or tap water — sits on top of the glass and can be dissolved and lifted off. Etching is different: it’s permanent micro-damage to the glass surface itself, and no product or technique restores it, ours included.

A couple of signs help tell them apart. Buildup often looks less noticeable when the glass is wet and more visible once it dries — that’s mineral residue catching the light, not damage. It also tends to feel like a slightly raised film if you run a fingernail across it. Etching, by contrast, looks the same wet or dry, often shows up as a dull, cloudy haze rather than distinct spots, and feels like part of the glass itself rather than something sitting on top of it. If you’re not sure which one you’re looking at, that’s normal — it’s genuinely hard to tell without testing it, which is exactly why we assess before we quote rather than guessing over the phone.

Why We Don’t Recommend Razor Blades or Steel Wool

Razor blades and steel wool come up constantly as DIY fixes for stubborn spots, and they can work on true buildup in careful hands. The risk is that they work by abrasion, so on tempered glass, coated glass, or glass that’s already etched, the same motion that removes a mineral deposit can leave fine scratches of its own — and unlike the mineral spot, a scratch doesn’t come out. We don’t use either method on a job until we’ve confirmed what we’re actually dealing with, and if it turns out to be etching, we’ll tell you that directly instead of charging for a “fix” that won’t hold up.

Prevention matters just as much as removal — a 0-PPM purified water finish on every regular cleaning keeps new mineral spotting from forming in the first place.
