Why Is My Window Cloudy? A San Clemente Diagnostic Guide
Why Is My Window Cloudy? A San Clemente Homeowner’s Diagnostic Guide
Not every cloudy window has the same cause — and knowing which one you’re dealing with saves you from paying for a cleaning that was never going to fix it.
“Cloudy” gets used to describe several completely different problems, and they don’t all have the same fix. Some clear right up with a proper cleaning. Others are permanent and need a glass specialist, not a window cleaner. Here’s how to tell the difference before you book anything.
Quick Reference: Appearance to Likely Cause
| What You See | Likely Cause | Cleaning Fixes It? |
|---|---|---|
| White spots that feel rough to the touch | Hard water / mineral spotting | Usually, yes |
| Hazy or milky film across the glass | Salt film or airborne mineral buildup | Usually, yes |
| Haze that sits between two panes of glass | Failed insulated-glass seal | No — needs glass repair/replacement |
| Streaks after cleaning | Leftover soap residue or hard tap water used to rinse | Yes, with purified water |
| Fine scratches that catch light | Glass surface damage | No — cleaning can’t remove scratches |
| Dark or discolored edge around the glass | Seal or frame deterioration | No — needs a repair specialist |
Hard Water Spots vs. Salt Film
These two get confused constantly, and San Clemente homes deal with both. Hard water spotting usually comes from sprinklers or irrigation overspray hitting the glass and drying, leaving mineral rings that feel slightly rough. Salt film comes from airborne salt off the ocean settling on glass and staying damp in the marine layer humidity, leaving more of a hazy coating than distinct spots. Both respond well to proper cleaning and purified water — the difference mostly matters for figuring out the source, so it doesn’t just come back in a few weeks.
The One That Cleaning Can’t Fix: Failed Seals
If the haze sits between the two panes of glass — not on the inside or outside surface — that’s a failed insulated-glass unit (IGU) seal. Moisture got into the gap between the panes and clouds the glass from the inside out. No amount of exterior or interior cleaning touches this, because the problem isn’t on a surface you can reach. That’s a glass replacement job, and we’ll tell you plainly if that’s what we’re looking at rather than clean around it.
When to Just Book a Cleaning
- Spots or film are on the outside surface of the glass
- The haze appeared gradually and evenly across the window
- Nearby windows with less sun/sprinkler exposure look clearer
- The window hasn’t been professionally cleaned in 6+ months
When to Get a Glass Repair Quote Instead
- The cloudiness is clearly between the two panes of glass
- You see scratches that catch the light at an angle
- The frame or edge seal looks discolored or deteriorated
- A previous cleaning didn’t change the appearance at all
