Why Do My Windows Still Streak After I Clean Them?

You cleaned the windows, they looked great wet — and then they dried into streaks, smears, or cloudy patches. It’s one of the most common DIY window-cleaning frustrations, and it’s almost never about not trying hard enough. It’s usually one of a handful of specific, fixable causes.

The Usual Causes of Streaky Windows

  • Too much cleaner, not enough squeegee technique. A heavy spray of glass cleaner without a proper squeegee pull leaves excess product to dry unevenly on the glass — that’s what shows up as streaks.
  • The wrong wipe-down material. Paper towels and regular cloth towels shed lint and push moisture around instead of lifting it off, which is exactly what causes smearing.
  • Cleaning in direct sun. Glass cleaner dries too fast in full sun, before it can be wiped or squeegeed off evenly — leaving streaks behind almost every time. (See does it matter what time of day windows are cleaned? for more on timing.)
  • Hard water and mineral content in the rinse water. If the water used to rinse or clean isn’t purified, it can leave behind the same mineral spotting that causes hard water stains in the first place — a streak-free wipe today can still leave spots once the water dries.

Why Professional Cleanings Don’t Streak

The short version: purified water. We use 0-PPM deionized water, which has had the dissolved minerals removed — so it air-dries completely spot-free without needing a perfect wipe-down to avoid streaks or spotting. That removes the two biggest streak causes at once: no cleaner residue to dry unevenly, and no mineral content left behind as the water evaporates. More on how that process works on our purified water window cleaning page.

If your streaking issue keeps coming back no matter how carefully you wipe, it’s worth checking whether it’s actually hard water mineral buildup rather than a technique problem — the fix for that is different from just cleaning more carefully.

Is It Worth Doing It Yourself?

For a single ground-floor window, sure — with the right technique it’s manageable. For a whole house, especially with San Clemente’s salt film and hard water on top of the usual dust, the time and repeat-attempt frustration is exactly why most homeowners eventually call a pro. We break down the tradeoffs in more detail in DIY vs. Professional Window Cleaning.
