Window Cleaning Glossary: Terms San Clemente Homeowners Should Know

A few terms come up constantly when talking about window cleaning on the coast, and they don’t always mean what they sound like. Here’s a plain-language reference.

Salt film — a hazy residue left on glass when airborne ocean salt settles and stays damp in the marine layer instead of drying off. Removable with purified water if caught early; becomes permanent etching if left roughly a year or more.

Hard water spotting — chalky mineral deposits left behind when mineral-heavy tap water or sprinkler overspray dries on glass. Different cause from salt film, and it needs a different fix — see our hard water stain removal page.

Purified (deionized) water — water stripped of dissolved minerals so it air-dries on glass without leaving any spotting behind, no squeegee or towel-drying required.

Water-fed pole system — an extension pole that feeds purified water through a soft brush head, used to reach second-story and upper windows from the ground without a ladder.

Marine layer — the band of coastal fog and humidity common in San Clemente that keeps salt film damp instead of letting it dry and blow away, one of the reasons coastal homes need more frequent cleaning than inland ones.

Etching — permanent damage to the glass surface caused by mineral or salt deposits left too long, distinct from surface film that can still be cleaned off.
